Brian Donnelly is an American contemporary artist and designer who has developed a niche for himself in the world of art and design. His most recent works, especially his most recent book Kaws: An American Odyssey (Simon & Schuster) feature an almost entirely different type of art from what he was doing before, such as his award winning piece “American Spirituality” (Equinox Press, 2020).
The book begins with Kaws' description of the subject matter of his art, and it follows with his philosophy on the process of becoming an artist. He then describes the process by which he came to create his artwork in a visual sense, by means of paintings that are often highly abstract in nature, as well as paintings that have multiple themes or multiple subjects in them. He talks about the influence of his father, his mother, the environment, and the influences of the people and things around him, including his neighbor, who had “an artistic sensibility that was almost spiritual.” Brian goes into detail about the various types of art that he has made in the past, including the “big three” art forms; collage, painting, and sculpture, and why he prefers to work with each of these art forms.
The book ends with an overview of the different types of art that have influenced him throughout the years, including the American Indian movement and its impact on the way he made his art. He also discusses the types of paintings that he prefers to make, and the techniques that he uses to make them. He also explains his decision to begin his journey into the world of art as an artist, and his decision to become an artist with a more “serious” approach. Finally, he goes into detail about the benefits of creating a collection of “Kawasaki”kaws” (a Japanese word for “inspiring”), because he hopes that he can inspire others to go on this same journey and be inspired as he was. He also goes into great detail about his own experiences and the joy that he found in creating his own work.
If you have not yet had the pleasure of reading one of Brian Donnelly's books, I highly recommend that you do so. It is a quick and easy read that offers a wealth of information about the life and career of one of the most interesting American artists of our time. The book is formatted as if it were simply a short journal, complete with a timeline, footnotes, and bibliography. and was quite enjoyable to read.
While it would be difficult to write about all the aspects of Kaws' art in one review, I will say that I found myself especially intrigued by the part where he describes his “American Spirituality” as “a kind of spiritual meditation.” This was a nice way to end the book, and I really enjoyed reading about his spiritual side of life.
Overall, “Kaws: An American Odyssey” is a good and interesting read, and I highly recommend that you read it. It is a book that you can enjoy without worrying too much about the quality of the writing, and that is something that many other books on contemporary artists' lives do not offer.
