Watercolour koi are one of the most popular types of Koi and you will find that a lot of people want to learn how to grow these fish in their ponds. These fish have a very vibrant colour that is a result of the dye they contain. The dye is absorbed by the scales on the fish's body which produce this colour.
There are two main types of Koi that can be made into watercolour. There is the original black Koi which is known as the 'Koi from Japan' and then there is the white Koi known as the 'Koi from China'. Both Koi can be dyed so they can have their own distinct colour and make them unique. The difference between the two is the way the dye is absorbed and the fact that white Koi usually come with white or pink fins.
There are many different types of watercolour Koi, but they are all created using the same techniques. For starters you will need to cut the gills off so that the water will flow freely into the pond. The gills will be removed along with the skin and other pieces of the fish's body such as its tail. The water is then drained through a series of tubes and pipes to the fish tank.
After the water is drained the watercolour Koi are placed back in the tank and water is re-circulated through the tank. This is where their coloured scales will shine. The first few days it can be difficult to tell which ones are the real ones and you may even end up having to do a second round of watercolour.
When buying your fish from a pet store, you will notice that they usually have good watercolour Koi stock, however if you buy them online you will often find that there is no such stock available. It is important to note that the real ones do not usually come with the transparent scales so if you are buying them online make sure that you get the scales that are opaque before you decide on the type of Koi.
The colours you can buy for watercolour Koi vary quite a bit and you should take into account the fact that the water must be warm to the touch and must be filtered so that you do not end up with algae forming on them. Once the Koi has had a few days in water to dry out they will start to lose their colour and will become grey. Once your Koi have had this time they are ready to be put back into the water again.
