As you may already know, I have been making my own canvas panels for years. (Click the link to learn more about my first project.)
But you may not be aware that there are two different ways of creating these beautiful works of art. The type of canvas that you use will greatly determine the look and feel of your artwork, so I am going to explain the two main types of canvas.
The first type of canvas that I am going to discuss is a stretched panel. These panels look like they are made of strips of fabric stretched onto the wall, but they have become popular mainly because they can be very detailed. The biggest benefit of stretched panels is that they can be painted on with an oil pastel or acrylic paint very easily.
The second type of canvas is a stretched rectangle. You will notice that when you look at these pieces, that they appear to be more of a square or rectangular shape. These panels will usually take more time than their stretched counterparts, but they are much more detailed and more durable. You may be surprised at how much detail can be created on a stretched rectangle piece. If you are trying to do something complex with your stretched canvas, this is definitely the way to go.
So which type of canvas should you use to create your art project? The answer is both. They can be made from various types of canvas, such as stretching, stenciled, or colored.
The choice is really up to you. You may find that you prefer one kind of canvas over the other, or you just can't decide which type of canvas is right for you. My suggestion would be to try both and see which one you like better. If you do not enjoy using a stencil, then try using a stretched panel to give you the option of painting a detailed design.
Also, it is important to know that stretched panels can be used indoors and outdoors. This means that you could paint outdoors and then stretch the art out at night on the patio. Also, if you are not very good at stretching, you could paint on your stretched canvas while watching a movie or while relaxing in the living room. It really is up to you how you use stretched canvas.
Another thing to remember about stretched panels is that you should always use a backing to protect the paint. This will help you when it is time to re-hang the art.
To make sure that you get the most out of your stretched canvas, you will want to make sure that the backing is thick enough to protect the paint but is not too thick that it blocks the paint. It is also important that you let the paint dry completely before re-hanging it.
